The length of the first appointment varies depending on the individual provider and your specific situation. The typical duration of psychiatric evaluation is 60 minutes, but it can go beyond 60 minutes, depending on the presented problems. Follow-up visits vary between 15 to 45 minutes, depending on your presenting problem.
Be sure to have your insurance information for your first appointment. Have a list of all medications you are currently taking and the ones you have tried. Have a list of your previous psychiatric disorders from previous providers or hospitalizations. If you have been keeping track of your symptoms, mood, triggers, self-care, and other pertinent information, make sure to have them ready to share with your psychiatric provider.
