It’s expected to be a little nervous when you go to your first appointment with a mental health professional. You’re probably unsure what to expect, making you feel out of control. While it can be nerve-wracking, there is nothing to fear. I am here to listen, help you learn more about the process, and help you decide which steps to take next. Your mental health is worth investing time and energy in; I am here to help you.

The length of the first appointment varies depending on the individual provider and your specific situation. The typical duration of psychiatric evaluation is 60 minutes, but it can go beyond 60 minutes, depending on the presented problems. Follow-up visits vary between 15 to 45 minutes, depending on your presenting problem.

Be sure to have your insurance information for your first appointment. Have a list of all medications you are currently taking and the ones you have tried. Have a list of your previous psychiatric disorders from previous providers or hospitalizations. If you have been keeping track of your symptoms, mood, triggers, self-care, and other pertinent information, make sure to have them ready to share with your psychiatric provider.
